The other day, I taught a dance lesson in Whistler for the first time. Suddenly, the studio owner contacted me and asked,
"Can you teach a dance lesson today?"I had no preparation whatsoever, but without hesitation, I replied,
"No problem."But in reality, there were a lot of problems.
The next day, I had work in Vancouver and was already swamped with preparations. Even so, I had been through tougher times in my life. So, I convinced myself—I’ll manage somehow—and accepted the offer.
It had been over fifteen years since I last taught a dance lesson. I never imagined that experience would come in handy at this moment.
When I arrived at the studio, I had to introduce myself. So, I said, "My name is Jonatan. Some of you might know me as JACLOT. I'm really good at painting, and I can dance too. Life’s just unfair, isn't it?"
—Dead silence.
The room froze in an awkward stillness. At that moment, I made a promise to myself: I will never forget to stay humble.
To make up for my failed joke, I decided to perform a solo. The energy in the room instantly shifted—applause erupted.Maybe I really am a genius.
The students who came to the lesson were both men and women, of all ages. I never knew there were so many people in Whistler who were passionate about dance.
But what truly moved me was their spirit—No matter their age, they were eager to learn something new. Watching them stay focused, giving their all until the very end, I knew I had made the right choice in accepting this offer.
With passion, it’s never too late to start something new.
And so, I leave you with these words:
"The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is today."
I will carry this lesson with me for the rest of my life.
情熱こそが鍵
先日、ウィスラーで初めてダンスのレッスンをしました。突然、スタジオのオーナーから連絡があり、「今日ダンスレッスンできる？」と聞かれた。
準備も何もしていなかったが、迷わず「問題ないです」と答えた。
いや、本当は問題だらけだった。
翌日はバンクーバーで仕事があり、その準備で大忙し。
それでも、これまでの人生で、もっと大変な時期を乗り越えてきた。
だからきっと何とかなる――そう信じてオファーを受けた。
ダンスレッスンをするのは、実に十五年以上ぶり。
まさかこのタイミングで、この経験が役に立つとは思いもしなかった。
スタジオに着くと、まずは自己紹介をすることになり、
「俺の名前はジョナタン。多分、何人かはJACLOTとして俺を知ってると思う。実は俺、絵がめっちゃ上手くて、ダンスも踊れる。人生って不公平よね！」
――完全にすべった。
スタジオに静寂が訪れ、その場の空気が一瞬で凍りついた。その時、心に誓った。俺は一生、謙虚な気持ちを忘れずに生きていこう。
何とか挽回しようと、みんなの前でソロを披露した。すると、空気が一変する。拍手喝采。
やっぱ俺って天才かも？
レッスンを受けに来ていたのは、女性も男性もいて、年齢もさまざま。ウィスラーに、こんなにダンスに興味がある人たちがいるなんて知らなかった。
そして何より、感動したのは、年齢を重ねても、新しいことを学ぼうとするその姿勢に。最後まで集中し、一生懸命踊る生徒たちの姿を見て、
このオファーを受けて、本当に良かったと思った。
情熱さえあれば、何かを始めるのに遅すぎることなんてない。
最後に、この言葉を贈ります。
「木を植える最高のタイミングは二十年前だったのかもしれない。でも、二番目に最高のタイミングは今日です。」
この言葉を、俺は一生心に刻もう。
